As we step into a new year, January is a time for reflection and planning. Looking back at last year’s Catalyse Change programme, we’ve gathered insights from our end-of-programme survey to celebrate successes and shape an even more impactful experience for the year ahead. Through our catalyst stories, we explore the transformative journey they embarked on, gaining confidence, direction, and community support as they forged their career paths in sustainability.
Who are our catalysts?
Our programme attracts passionate changemakers from diverse backgrounds, each driven by a shared vision of sustainability and social impact:
Phoebe dreams of a career in journalism and broadcasting, combining it with advocacy in sustainability, anti-racism, and supporting neurodiverse young people.
Lilac has always been passionate about sustainability, conservation, and community projects but struggled with imposter syndrome. She joined the programme to build confidence and discover her unique skills.
Izzy, a textile design graduate, is pursuing a master’s in sustainability, aiming to merge creativity with conservation and circular design solutions.
Ellis sought guidance for a sustainable career and found invaluable mentorship that helped shape their direction and self-belief.
Their journeys demonstrate the wide-ranging interests and ambitions of those joining the programme – each seeking purpose, clarity, and the tools to make a real difference.
What was the experience like?
A key highlight for many was the Catalyst Summit and mentorship programme, both of which provided a welcoming, supportive, and insightful experience:
Izzy: “The summit was a great chance to network and learn about career opportunities, while also addressing climate anxiety. The mentorship programme was the highlight for me—it helped me organise my thoughts and take real steps towards my goals.”
Afiya: “Being part of Catalyse Change has been incredible. Learning about green careers, making connections, and having an encouraging mentor empowered me to carve my own path.”
Phoebe: “My mentor truly understood my aspirations and provided tailored advice that transformed the way I approach my studies, work, and personal life. The experience has shaped my career direction and helped me build sustainable habits.”
Lilac: “Hearing from guest speakers about their varied green career pathways was so inspiring. My mentor created a supportive environment where I could build confidence and start making concrete plans for my future.”
The three biggest takeaways
- The Power of Mentorship: Having a mentor provided clarity, encouragement, and career guidance that made a lasting impact.
- Diverse Pathways into Green Careers: Participants discovered that sustainability careers come in many forms, making their aspirations feel more attainable.
- Unwavering Support: The care, communication, and dedication from programme organisers fostered an empowering environment.
The transformative role of mentoring
Mentorship was a defining feature of the programme, equipping catalysts with confidence and direction:
Lilac: “The mentorship really built my confidence. It showed me that passion and transferable skills matter just as much as direct experience. I hope more employers recognise this and follow Catalyse Change’s lead.”
Phoebe: “Mentorship was the most impactful and life-changing part of the programme for me. Learning how to structure my time better has completely transformed how I work and live.”
Ellis: “As a neurodivergent individual, my mentor helped me recognise and work with my strengths. The perspective and self-belief I gained are invaluable.”
Building confidence & creating change
One of the most powerful outcomes of the programme is the boost in confidence participants gained:
Phoebe: “If I were recommending the Catalyst Summit to a friend, I’d tell them it’s life-changing. It has given me confidence in networking and believing I can succeed and change the world.”
Izzy: “I now have a clearer idea of what I want my future to look like, and I’m taking daily actions to make it a reality.”
For many, the programme was truly transformative, providing not only career insights but also personal growth, resilience, and a community of like-minded changemakers.
